In the Northern hemisphere, summer is coming to an end, holiday time is over. Children and students are going back to school soon (la rentrée) and you may now be listening to me on your commute rather than on the beach. Don’t worry! To help you transition smoothly, I’ll start the episode talking about holidays (the word “vacances in French”) and then we’ll move to duties and homework talk!

Une vacance, un poste vacant / libre/ à pourvoir = a job vacancy (position available)
Complet = No vacancy / Booked out
Devoir = must, have to
Je dois, tu dois, il doit, nous devons, vous devez, ils doivent
Je suis vraiment desolée, mais nous devons partir = I’m very sorry but we have to leave
Le devoir = the duty, obligation (moral duty)
L’appel du devoir = the call of duty
Les devoirs: the homework, assignment
Est-ce que tu as fini tes devoirs ? = Have you finished your homework ?
J’ai un devoir de maths à rendre demain = I have a maths assignment due tomorrow.
