Many words in French and English are similar or look similar. That’s lucky because it helps with learning vocabulary faster. However, these words sometimes means something very different in the two languages! In this case, they are called “faux amis”, false friends, or false cognates. Here’s a list of the 10 common false friends that came to my mind first!
Vocabulary and Spelling of the French Words mentioned in this episode
Actuellement = currently
Les actualités = the news, the current affair
En fait = actually
Finalement / un jour = eventually
Éventuellement = potentially
Une éventualité = eventuality, event
dans l’éventualité de = in case of [sth]
particulièrement, en particulier, surtout = especially
spécialement = especially
Il est végétarien donc j’ai préparé ce plat spécialement pour lui = he’s a vegetarian so I’ve prepared this dish specially for him.
Passer un examen = to take / sit an exam
Réussir à = to succeed
Achever = finir, terminer
Réussir = to achieve
Realiser = to make come true
Se rendre compte de/que = to realise
Demander = to ask, to enquire
Exiger = to demand
Une issue = an exit, a way out
Un problème = an issue
Attendre = to wait, to expect
Assister à = to attend
Le collège = secondary school (from 11-16 y.o)
L’université, la faculté (la fac) = college, uni
